Potluck Guidance

What is a Potluck Meal?

It’s no secret that Jews love to eat – and at Makor Hayim we’re no exception.

Many of our Shabbat services and special events include a pot-luck meal or kiddush.

This is a co-created buffet where everyone provides a vegetarian and nut-free main dish, side or dessert enough for 4 people, to feed our bodies as well as our souls.

We recognise some folks aren’t only able to make small contributions or not at all, for example due to financial or mobility constraints, or because they’re going through life challenges. Totally understood, no questions asked. For this reason, we ask that folks who can contribute do so within their means, as an act of community care.

Potluck Inspo

‘I don’t know what to bring! Inspire me…’

Either home-cooked delicacies and shop-bought delights are welcome, as long as you can list the ingredients for allergy purposes (see below).

Bonus points if your dish has a story or family legacy you can share…

If you are able to contribute – YES Please:
Hearty salads, pasta dishes, casseroles, curries, homemade bread, chocolate mousse, banana bread, fruit salad, substantial veg side dishes.

Thanks but no thanks:
Soups (too messy to serve); foods that are difficult to cut and share between many people.

Potluck Preparation Guide

The Golden Rules

Nut-Free Zone: Keep those almonds, walnuts, and sneaky pine nuts at home. Our allergic friends will thank you.

Vegetarian Vibes: Think plants, dairy, eggs. Your grandmother’s famous brisket will have to sit this one out.

Portion Power: Bring enough for 4 people to share. Think “generous helping” not “dinner for one.”

Labeling Like a Pro

We’ll have allergen labels ready when you arrive – just grab one and jot down the key ingredients. Think of it as giving your dish a proper introduction to its new friends.

Get Creative!

This is your chance to surprise us! That fusion dish you’ve been wanting to try? The family recipe everyone who tries it gets obsessed with? The dessert that hits the spot every time? Bring it on!
Looking forward to seeing what delicious adventures you bring to our table.
To good food and great company – L’chaim!
