From praying to playing, social justice to socialising, singing to sharing food, there’s something for everyone at Makor Hayim.

Here’s a glossary of the different event types we currently run, mainly run by volunteers who are Builders (members) of our community.

For security purposes, we only release the venue for events to folks who register on Eventbrite and identify themselves to our Community Coordinator Amita.

Our Events

Kulanu Shabbat - The Everyone Shabbat

What is it?
An energetic, intergenerational song-filled Shabbat service for all ages. Dance along to your favourite Shabbat tunes, accompanied by shake-y eggs, tambourines, maracas and more. Parade the Torah around, and take part in activities that make our Torah stories come alive, however old we are. Stay and play with friends old and new. And snack away during yummy Kiddush.

When is it?
Second Friday of the month

Shabbat Babayit - Shabbat at Home

What is it?
Who doesn’t love some Friday night hospitality? A song-filled, spiritually uplifting Kabbalat Shabbat / Friday night service in the house of a local community member. Expect singing, meditation, words of wisdom, and opportunities to connect with others. Usually followed by a delicious potluck meal.

When is it?
Third Friday of the month, 6.30-7.30 Service, 7.40 Kiddush, often followed by a potluck bring-and-share meal.

Classic Shabbat Morning

What is it?
An uplifting, participatory Progressive Shabbat morning service. Expect lots of singing, opportunities to connect with others, kids activities and a sociable Kiddush afterwards

When is it?
Last Saturday of the month, 10.30-12.30, with Kiddush 12.30-1.

Challah Time!

What is it?
Challah Time runs monthly on Fridays, 3.45-5.15pm by volunteer Builders, kindly hosted in people’s homes. Check our Events Page (linked) to book your family’s spot.

When is it?
A Friday evening learning experience for children 0-5 and their families. We make mini challot, drink cups of tea, share a Shabbat activity and story, then when our challah is freshly baked we bless and eat it to bring in Shabbat together! Who’s it for: 0-5s and their grown ups (older siblings welcome). This event is open to Community Builders/Members and their friends. It is held in a private home, so if you are interested in joining a Challah Time, please enquire via amita@makorhayim.org.

Shabbat Online

What is it?
A supportive, meaningful, and comforting way to celebrate Shabbat from home. Shabbat Online is especially for those who can’t make it to in-person services—whether because of distance, mobility, or simply preferring to join virtually. It’s a community-led, song-filled, and spiritually uplifting space, held by a dedicated group of motivated Builders who show up week after week. Visitors and first-timers are warmly welcomed into this circle of connection, prayer, and song.

When is it?
Every Friday evening and every Shabbat morning. Sometimes this is a dedicated online service, and other times it’s a hybrid stream of our in-person gatherings—so wherever you are, you can join in.

Festivals

What should I expect?
For each Jewish festival, a group of Makor Hayim volunteers teams up to weave together a meaningful, inspirational service with something for all ages. Bring your traditions and your questions; your faith and your doubts; your singing voice and an appetite for festive treats
