We explicitly welcome, celebrate and support our transgender builders and allies and all people of all genders who walk through our doors. Makor Hayim is, continues to be, and will always be a safe space for transgender people. No court ruling will ever change this.
We acknowledge the pain, fear and suffering caused to the transgender community in the wake of the For Women Scotland vs. Scottish Ministers supreme court decision. We say to our transgender siblings: “We witness you, we stand in solidarity with you and we declare that you are all made B’tzelem Elohim – in the image of the multiplicity of gender presentations of the Divine.” We trace our descent from the Hebrews – Ivrim, literally “the Ones who Cross Over”. We have just retold the story of the Exodus, the tale of coming out of Mitzrayim, the Narrow Place, to a place of freedom, unfurling and liberation. We say to our transgender siblings, “We will accompany you in this Mitzrayim, this Narrow Place, until we reach Liberation, and beyond.”
We are a community built on Tzedek – Justice – working towards the creation of a more loving world. And Chesed – Kindness – building a community of care and friendship; showing up for each other’s joys and struggles. Guided by these values, we affirm and reaffirm:
Transgender Jews belong here.
